About Hi8 Tapes:
Hi8, short for Hi-band Video 8 is a compact 8mm video
format made popular by Sony in the late '80s. Hi8
tapes are one of three 8mm video tape formats: Video8,
Hi8, and Digital8. Sony introduced Hi8 to compete
with the S-VHS format. Hi8 tapes use higher grade
videotape and recording heads to record more detailed
pictures. Hi8 tapes are rated at a luminance
resolution of 420 horizontal lines (560x480 in today's
digital terms), whereas regular8 tapes are at 240 lines.
Hi-8 video cassette's are the same size at regular
video8 tapes 3 11/16" wide X 2 7/16" high X 9/16" deep
(see Hi8 cassette image to the right) and also use a 1/3
inch magnetic tape as the recording medium. Hi8 tapes are very common and can hold up to
3 hours
of video footage. Hi8 equipment supports the
playback and recording of legacy Video8.
Note: there is no Hi8 adaptor for VCR playback.
